I am thrilled to announce Hope for Ghana’s plans to build a third library in Ghana this coming spring. A year after the opening of a library and computer lab in the village of Keta, plans are underway to build the next library in the Volta Region of Ghana.
One of the Ghanaian teachers recently commented about the second library and computer lab on my website, “Thank you Dr. Steve. This library is helping the community a lot. I have been with them since they’ve started using the library in the vacation. The reading skills of the kids are improving drastically. A volunteer from Italy is helping them in both English and French. Also the ICT lab is in the best use. The students are using it to sharpen their mathematical knowledge …” One of the summer volunteers working in the library and computer lab wrote to me, “Volunteering with the kids this summer has been a wonderful and enriching experience and the library is a great place for them to improve not only their reading and comprehension skills but their knowledge and appreciation of a wide range of topics. This will undoubtedly stimulate their curiosity and help them achieve their potential. Thank you for making this possible.” It’s clearly time for the next library to be built.
The day after Thanksgiving I received a call from a dear college friend, Chris, who wanted to let me know that his 16 year old daughter, Elena, had died from leukemia. Elena was a very thoughtful and politically active girl who was involved in activities supporting third world aid and assistance to the homeless. She was a true humanitarian who wanted to make the world a better place. In the words of her parents, “Elena really wanted to do something to change the world, so it now is our task to do so, and by doing so have her thoughts live on.” I am very proud to announce that Hope for Ghana’s third library will be dedicated to Elena Haasen to honor the memory of her life.
Please join me in the fundraising of this new project as Hope for Ghana continues its mission to bring educational tools never before available to these children. I truly believe your contributions will forever change their lives. Thank you for joining me on this exciting journey. Together we will bring a brighter future to the children in Ghana.
With much gratitude,
Steve Greene, MD
