Ghana Gets A Visit From Germany

Ghana Gets A Visit From Germany

Last month The Elena Haasen Library, Hope for Ghana’s project built in 2015, was honored with very special guests from Hamburg. On the day following what would have been Elena’s 18th birthday, Elena’s parents, sister and 3 friends departed from Germany to Ghana to see the library and computer lab that symbolizes the values and ideals of Elena that continue to live on in the rural village of Tegbi. FC St. Pauli, Hamburg’s professional football club, and their fan club, the Fanladen, continued their support of Hope for Ghana and their commitment to honoring the memory of Elena Haasen with huge donations of football equipment for Tegbi Agbedrafor Basic School’s girls and youth football teams. The Fanladen’s latest newsletter from August 24, 2016 shared the following story of the Haasen family and friends’ journey:

Delegation from Germany visits The Elena Haasen Library in Tegbi

fanladen

In July 2016 the Haasen family (Lia, Anke and Chris) and three of Elena´s friends (Carlos, Ana and Marli) visited the school in Tegbi with the library dedicated to Elena. They were able to experience the impact of the library for 800 students in their school routine. Anke and Ana especially spent many hours with children who were hungry to learn, and helped them learn how to read. The library was also expanded to include the first books in the local language, Ewe (so far all books were in the official language, English).

haasenThanks to donations from the soccer club FC St. Pauli from Hamburg and two of the professional players, Jan-Philipp Kalla and Davidson Eden, the girls soccer team as well as the young boys soccer team were equipped with jerseys, trousers, cleats and balls. The equipment was inaugurated in a soccer match between the girls and the boys teams, with Lia and Ana helping out on the girls team, much to the amusement of the rest of the school watching on the sidelines. Furthermore, students in Hamburg from both Elena´s (Gymnasium Altona) and Lia´s high school (Gymnasium Allee) had collected two suitcases full of school supplies, especially pens and pencils, which were donated to the Tegbi Agbedrafor School. Up until now many children attended school without bringing a pen or pencil, as their families may not have been able to afford them. This shall not be the case any more in the school year coming up! Nonetheless more deficiencies surfaced during the visit to Agbedrafor School. Especially the roof of one of the three school buildings is in such bad shape, with holes three feet in diameter, that the building cannot be used when it rains. Donations from FC St. Pauli will hopefully generate sufficient funds to finance a new roof at the school.

It became very clear to the six visitors, that the library has impacted the school tremendously, with the children showing great improvement in reading and writing. The donations from Hamburg were greatly appreciated and motivated both students and teachers in the school to continue with the long process of learning. As the dedication plaque reads: “Elena´s thoughts and ideals continue to inspire and will live on forever!”

Inspirational Feedback

You are changing lives with your love and your hope and your financial support. Your life and their lives will never be the same again. And truly if you touch the heart of one person for one second and make a difference in their life, your life had meaning. I feel that if you look in the face of someone "truly" in need and help them in any way, even with a hug or a kind word, you are never the same. And I do believe that is our life's purpose. God is happy with you. You are doing all he asks of us and with kindness and gratitude. He is who we please when "whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you have done unto me." -Michelle Locke, Pittsburgh, PA

Reading each email nearly brings a tear to my eye. Not only the benevolence that you have bestowed but the passion that you have to do more makes you truly a humanitarian. Thank you for continuing your tireless work but also for proving that there are great people in this world doing amazing things for others. Too often that is lost among the stories of prejudice, hate and tragedy. To the people of Ghana, you are saving lives with each drop of water, textbook and block of a schoolhouse. -Aaron Salyards, Pittsburgh, PA

When kids prefer to run to the library during a school break instead of playing with the other kids, when kids are willing to sit on the floor to read in an already overcrowded library during that break, then you know that Hope for Ghana is doing exactly the right thing in that community. -Christian Haasen, Hamburg, Germany

What a magnificent job you are accomplishing. I can't believe what has been done in the weeks you were there. This is why we are here and you have really been inspired to carry on with this work. God bless you and I do pray for you every day that God continues to enlighten you and protect you in this most beautiful project you have undertaken. The children seem so grateful they have Uncle Steve. God bless you and may he hold you in the palm of his hands. -Dee Paiano, Pittsburgh, PA

Thank you for sharing the pictures and videos. Your speech was very touching, sweet and straight from the heart. What you are doing is amazing. Not many people are able to help out as much as they would like to. Thanks to your efforts, you've made it possible for others to help out where they can too. Hope for Ghana is a way for others around the world to pitch in and make a difference for the kids of the future. Thank you for all your hard work. -Ezgi Muderrisoglu, Cork, Ireland
